    "U Kba" is an original Khasi poem written by @rangskhembormawblei , who is a sculptor and installation artist. He teaches in Mairang Vidyajyoti Inclusive Secondary School. He completed his BFA & MFA from Visva Bharati University, Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan.

    Rice paddy is known to every Khasi household, it moves the circle of life and the circle of seasons too. We appreciate poetry like this because it gives us a depth of meaning, it gives in each paddy valuable seeds of thought. 🏞️🌾🌾

    Translation: "I wrote this poem in a funny way based on my own experience and I know most of us also experience the same things during the winter, especially those of us who stay in places where there is heavy frost like in my village."

Kane kam long tang shaphang ki khanaparom ne ki khanatang jong ngi, hynrei ka jia ha ka jungim kaba man la ka sngi ruh. Kum haba ngi ong ba lah "thoh shun ki blei"' ne haba ngi ong "Kamai ïa ka hok". Ngi ngeit bad ngi bud ïa kata kaba la ïathuh pateng ha ngi. Kano kano kaba la kren ka don ka bor bad ka jingshisha. Kane ka dei ka bor jong ki riti dustur kiba la ai pateng ha ngi.

    Some thoughts about translation:

    It is something beautiful and remarkable that the oral tradition will never leave us. This is not only concerning our folktales but our day to day life. For instance, when we say "thoh shun ki blei", being marked for good fortune by the gods or "kamai ia ka hok", earn righteousness and integrity. We believe it and we adhere to what has been passed down to us. Anything that is said, anything that is spoken holds validity and power. This is the power of the oral tradition.

    Because of the deep roots and continuing relevance of orality in Khasi culture, the spoken word will have its conflict with the written word. Yet through translation, there is perhaps a reconciliation rather than a tussle between the spoken word and the written word. Especially when translating from Khasi to English, the attempt is to capture the multi-layered quality of the spoken word which is itself so fluid. We hope we have not lost the nuances and beauty of the spoken word. Translation should try to capture that, though this is not 100% guaranteed. The spirit of the spoken word will always be different from the ink of the written word.

    We need to develop and grow the reading culture in our indigenous language otherwise our language and literature will not stand the test of time. 🕐🕔 It's happening already. Many Khasi books are out of print. We applaud those who are trying to publish old editions again!👏👏👏

  • Sming Smong

    This is a satiric take on a Khasi colloquialism 😄

    "Sming Smong" is a dangerous disorder afflicting convent-educated/ foreign-returned/ YouTube fixated youths and grown-ups alike, who are often compelled to speak in English or Khalish when in the company of others and having a strong sense of one's own merit and a poor concept of the worth in others. The ailment mysteriously disappears when the individuals are not in a situation where they feel threatened or feel the need to show-off. Smings smongs are often at odds with the majority.

    Over the years "Sming Smong" which is loaded with sarcasm, has become a colloquialism in Khasi conversation, referring to someone who has "perhaps" (air quotes please) lost his or her Khasi distinctness because of western conditioning 😁😂😅

    "Ka Lashai" which means "Tomorrow" is a beautiful poem about the journey of human life. It may be titled "Tomorrow" but it also stresses on how the present is what we should take care of. ☀️🌒☀️

    "Ka khulpi" ka dei ka jingshisha ba la buhrieh; ka dei kaei-kaei ka bym lah ban iohi. I Rev. Dr. Ïarington Kharkongor ha ka Dienshonhi jong i, i ai ïa ka ktien phareng "secret" hadien ka jingbatai ïa ka ktien "khulpi".

    Ka don ka jingong kaba ong: "Kren da thew ha la ka khulpi". Kane ka mut ban kren da kaba sumar ha khmat ki briew, ne haba duwai ha u Blei, ban antad bad ban thew ïa la ka ktien ha ka tarajur ka mynsiem bad ka dohnud, shuwa ban pynmih ïa ka shabar.

    Tharai ngi lah ban pyndonkam da kane ka kyntien ïa ka ktien "secret". Phi pyrkhat kumno?

    Ka khulpi is a truth that is hidden; it is something that cannot be seen. Rev. Dr. Ïarington Kharkongor in his dictionary adds the English word "secret" after the Khasi explanation of khulpi.

    There is also a Khasi phrase which says: Kren da thew ha la ka khulpi which means to speak with care and caution in front of people, or when in prayer to God, to assess and measure words in the scales of the soul and heart, before speaking the words.

    So perhaps we may use the word "khulpi" for the "secret". What do you think?
