    "Ingkhong" and "Khluit" are verbs that are used to describe a state of being angry.

    Nga lah sngew "ingkhong" bha – "Ingkhong" means burnt implying to be burning with anger.

    I "khluit" i Pa mynne te – "Khluit" means hot implying perhaps a heated argument.

  • Ka kyntien Khasi “Kai”/ The Khasi word “Kai” by Janice Pariat

    In Khasi, the adverb "kai" suggests a mood that has no English equivalent and yet is very much a part of the lexicon of Khasi identity. "Kai" possesses a sense of pleasurable purposelessness, suffixed to a whole host of activities – "Ïaid kai" (to ramble, to stroll in the manner of a flaneur); "shong kai" (to sit around), "peit kai" (to just look), "leit kai" (to go on a leisurely outing) and so on.

    Perhaps "hanging out" or "chilling" best approaches the feeling contained in the word -although both these terms indicate an attitude that involves some premeditation or conscious choice and somehow do not quite capture the relaxed, joyful spontaneity of the easy-going "kai" with its wonderful connotations of having the freedom to roam, to look, to relax – "for free" – in a world that is not bound by the demands of time.

  • Darapjot

    Ka ktien Khasi "darapjot" ka dei ka jingpyrshang ban buhrieh ïa kaei kaei ka bym lah shuh ban buhrieh. Kane ka dei ka jingda ïalade ban lait na kano kano ka jinglehraiñ. Tangba ka lah paw ha kiba peit ne kiba sngap ba u briew u shu thaw daw bym ler ban tap ïa kaei kaei kaba lah ban pynwan ïa ki jingkynthoh ka bym sngewtynnat.

    The Khasi word "darapjot" describes the attempt to hide something that actually cannot be hidden anymore. This is a way to protect oneself so as to be free of any possible humiliation.

    But it may be evident to the observer or the listener that the person is making a lame excuse to cover up something that may invite negative criticism.

    Bun na ngi ngi tip ïa ka ktien "darapjot". Shisyn pule ka pynmih ïa ka dur jong ka jaiñ ba lah jot tangba kaba shu syrdep hangne hangtai ban nym i jot rathai eh. 🆘🤷

    Da peit ïa ka ktien ka i kumba ka wan na laitylli ki kyntien, kata ka "da", "ïarap" bad "jot".

    Many of us know the word "darapjot". The literal meaning of the word brings up the image of a tattered cloth that is mended here and there so as to not appear too torn and shabby. 🆘🤷

    The word also seems to be made up of three words, that is "da" meaning protect, "ïarap" meaning help and "jot" meaning torn or ruined.

  • Apot Sepsngi

    Ka ktien "apot" ka mut ka jingjynjar, ka lanot, ka suhsat bad ka shitom.

    The Khasi word "apot" refers to the experience of hardship, misfortune, adversity and difficulty.

    Ka jingong "apot sepsngi" ka thew ïa ka lanot bad ka suhsat kaba hap ïaid lyngba kaba la palat liam. Ngi lah ban batai ba ka ktien "sepsngi" ka thew ïa ka jingduh jingkyrmen bad ka jingsngewsih kaba la sngew kutlad shisha.

    The Khasi phrase "apot sepsngi" describes the misfortune or adversity that befalls which is hard for one to bear. We may explain the word "sepsngi" (literally meaning setting sun) symbolically refers to hopelessness and sorrow with no respite in sight.

    The phrase "Apot Sepsngi" describes a tragedy or a catastrophe that befalls a person. 😓😟 Its meaning is made more significant by the metaphor of the setting sun, echoing a dark time and hopelessness.

  • Ka Khulpi/ Secret

    "Ka khulpi" ka dei ka jingshisha ba la buhrieh; ka dei kaei-kaei ka bym lah ban iohi. I Rev. Dr. Ïarington Kharkongor ha ka Dienshonhi jong i, i ai ïa ka ktien phareng "secret" hadien ka jingbatai ïa ka ktien "khulpi".

    Ka don ka jingong kaba ong: "Kren da thew ha la ka khulpi". Kane ka mut ban kren da kaba sumar ha khmat ki briew, ne haba duwai ha u Blei, ban antad bad ban thew ïa la ka ktien ha ka tarajur ka mynsiem bad ka dohnud, shuwa ban pynmih ïa ka shabar.

    Tharai ngi lah ban pyndonkam da kane ka kyntien ïa ka ktien "secret". Phi pyrkhat kumno?

    Ka khulpi is a truth that is hidden; it is something that cannot be seen. Rev. Dr. Ïarington Kharkongor in his dictionary adds the English word "secret" after the Khasi explanation of khulpi.

    There is also a Khasi phrase which says: Kren da thew ha la ka khulpi which means to speak with care and caution in front of people, or when in prayer to God, to assess and measure words in the scales of the soul and heart, before speaking the words.

    So perhaps we may use the word "khulpi" for the "secret". What do you think?

    Ki kyntien "Bira-biri" ki mut ba lamwir jingmut, ba lyngngoh, ba kulmar, ne ba lynrum lynram.

    The Khasi adjective "Bira-biri" elaborates on a state of confusion, of feeling perplexed, of chaos and disorder.

  • Kyrtoh Lyndet

    Ka ktien "kyrtoh" ka mut ban rynsied ne ban kynthih; ka thew ruh ïa ka jingryngkoh nalor ka jingker.

    Ka jingong "kyrtoh lyndet" ka mut ka jingwan ne ka jingpashat jong ka markylliang ne ka bainong jong kano kano ka kam kaba la leh u briew.

    The Khasi "kyrtoh" means to leap or to jump. The word also implies leaping over a boundary.

    The Khasi phrase "kyrtoh lyndet" is the coming or manifestation of retribution, meaning the reward or punishment of anything that is done by a person. "Kyrtoh lyndet" emphasises a boomerang effect or a rebound effect to anything that is done in life.

    The Khasi words "Kyrtoh Lyndet" affirms the consequences of anything that is done by us in life. 🌀🪃🪃
