    "Jaiñkyrshah" in Khasi or "Kyrchah" in Pnar is a piece of clothing that is worn by Khasi and Pnar women. It is a chequered piece of cotton cloth that comes in different colours. It is tied at two ends and worn by slinging over the shoulder. The "Jaiñkyrshah" or "Kyrchah" is daily wear that appears to be simple yet it holds great significance. Besides being a practical apron for women, it emanates charm and dignity and voices a respect for one's culture and identity."

    The "Jaiñkyrshah" or "Kyrchah" is a distinctive piece of indigenous clothing that should be valued. It is special because women of all ages can wear it and always look good in it. 🥰🥰🥰

  • Ka Behdieñkhlam

    The Behdieñkhlam festival is a popular harvest festival celebrated by tribal communities in the Jaiñtia Hills District of Meghalaya. The festival is observed by followers of the "Niamtre" faith (indigenous faith).

    In many parts of the world, a successful harvest is always a time to celebrate or appease the gods to ensure a bountiful crop.

    "Behdieñkhlam" is a combination of three words, "Beh" (to get rid of), "Dieñ" (wood or log) and "Khlam" (plague). Together, these words become one and translate into ‘to get rid of plague’. The prime objective of the festival is to pray to God for good health and harvest.

  • Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem

    Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem is celebrated in the month of April as a thanksgiving to mother nature for good harvest and for fresh sowing of seeds. Both men and women participate in the dance where the steps of women are subtle, whereas those of men are more energetic. Men play a part of protectors for the women who are inside the outer circle. Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem dance is also symbolic of women's fertility where they are receptacles of seeds and bearers of fruit, and men are cultivators who plant, cultivate and nurture the seeds until they are harvested.

    "Ka jaiñ-it" is a traditional baby sling-wrap used by Khasis and Pnars which may be described as a long strip of cotton cloth made from big strands of white thread with red stripes at the ends. In the Khasi and Jaiñtia hills, mothers use this cloth to carry a baby on their backs, so as to be able to perform work in the house or outside.

    Khasi women are never idle sitters. We see mothers carrying babies securely and safely fastening them with the jaiñ-it while they go about their daily work, be it cooking, washing and sometimes tilling the field.

    The jaiñ it is traditionally gifted by the paternal grandmother to her grandchildren. This practise is still alive and well. However, the use of the jain-it is lessening in the urban areas. The jain-it can be used all year round and is particularly handy in the winter months when the baby is snugly fastened and then a "jaiñ-kup" (flannel shawl) is wrapped around the baby to keep it warm.

    Most of us have a picture of ourselves tied by a "jaiñ-it" on our mother's back when we were babies ☺️☺️

    Kudos to our mothers for being the symbolic "jaiñ-it" who bind our families together with their unconditional love 🧡🧡🧡
